The roar of the crowd, the thud of the Sherrin, and the passionate cries of teammates—the sights and sounds of Australian Rules Football are set to electrify Chon Buri, Thailand, for the AFL Asia Asian Championships this year. Among the dedicated teams converging from across the continent are the Philippine Eagles, a squad poised not just to compete, but to make history. This year’s campaign represents a monumental shift for the sport in the Philippines, heralding a new era defined by homegrown talent, international experience, and unshakeable national pride.
For the first time, the Philippine Eagles are flying to the championships with a team that truly reflects the heart and soul of the nation. The Men’s Division 2 squad features a record-breaking 15 Filipino national players, a significant and proud departure from the expat-heavy lineups of the past. This new generation is stepping onto the international stage, bringing a raw enthusiasm and a deep-seated determination to proudly wear the flag on their chest.
This youthful energy is bolstered by seasoned veterans who are answering the call to represent their heritage. Take Jibb Iglesias, a 46-year-old dynamo who has been playing footy since he was a boy in Victoria, Australia. After years of playing in the AFL Masters league, he is seizing a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to play for his birth country, bringing a wealth of experience to mentor the younger Filipino players. Joining him is Josh Robles, a standout midfielder from New Zealand. A key figure in the Canterbury AFL and a member of the New Zealand Falcons national team, Robles is now set to represent the Philippines, adding elite skill and leadership to the Eagles’ lineup. The fusion of emerging local talent with experienced international players like Iglesias and Robles creates a powerful and dynamic squad.
The historic milestones don’t stop with the men’s team. The Eagles are also immensely proud to be championing the growth of women’s footy. For the first time, the Philippines will be represented in the women’s competition, with two players, Anna Patricio and Nicole Gifford, joining the Division 2 Women’s Barbarians team. This includes the incredible achievement of fielding the first-ever Filipina national women’s player. It’s a groundbreaking moment that lays the foundation for a much larger dream: fielding a full, independent Philippine Eagles women’s team at the 2026 Championships.
Behind every successful team is a dedicated support network. Under the guidance of Coach Brendan Driscoll and Team Manager Matt Jones, this spirited group of athletes has been training relentlessly. However, their journey wouldn’t be possible without the incredible backing of their community and sponsors. The Eagles extend their heartfelt gratitude to key partners like Outposter, Electrodry, Handlebar Manila, Mode, and Boutique Outsource Solutions. These sponsors, along with the generous individuals who have contributed through the team’s GoFundMe campaign, are the wind beneath the Eagles’ wings.
As the Philippine Eagles prepare to take on Asia’s best, they carry with them the hopes of a burgeoning football community. This isn’t just about winning games; it’s about showcasing the passion of Filipino athletes and inspiring the next generation. The Eagles are ready. Let’s watch them soar!
